Description
This course introduces the student to maternal child health andpsychosocial nursing. The student will explore principles of familycentered care, health promotion, illness prevention, theoreticalperspectives of human development, the nature of health andcommunication across the life span in a psychosocial context.The student also explores the roles and responsibilities of thePractical Nurse in the care of clients during the perinatal period andthe continuum from infancy through adolescence. Planning carefor the infant, child, and pregnant woman, based on anatomical,physiological, and psychosocial differences are emphasized. Theinfluences of ethnicity and culture on childbearing and childrearingare examined. Nursing needs of clients experiencing stress, anxiety,loss, grief, and death are discussed. Classroom content on mentalillness and substance abuse will be expanded in clinical experiences.The student will integrate the nursing process, principles oftherapeutic communication, safety, and growth and development,and family roles into the care of clients in health care settings.Clinical experiences will be provided to enable the student to transfertheory into practice of the MCH and psychosocial client. The studentwill spend five weeks in pediatrics, five weeks in obstetrics and fiveweeks in mental health settings. Pre/Co-requisites: ENGL 112 andBIO 104 and NUR 023 and NUR 024 and NUR 025 and NUR 026and NUR 027 and NURL 028 and NUR 028 and NUR 029 and NUR030/Co-requisites: NUR 028 and NURL 028
