General Information

The mission of the Department of Nursing is congruent with the mission of the College. Our dedicated faculty and staff work collaboratively to ensure that students are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and clinical experience needed to excel in both traditional and emerging healthcare settings. We support lifelong learning and embrace career mobility.

The department provides degree programs with clear articulation between them. The College commits to students who desire self-improvement, a sound education, an opportunity to develop a personal value system, and an opportunity to gain maximum benefits from life experience and their environment. The department promotes this mission through its commitment to excellence in nursing education.

The Department of Nursing offers a RN-BS Completion Program (BS) degree for Registered Nurses, an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree, and a Certificate in Practical Nursing (PN). The programs of study are designed to:

  1. Provide a three-step career ladder in nursing education.

  2. Maintain academic excellence and encourage lifelong learning.

  3. Reflect the awareness of the holistic health care needs of Central Brooklyn and New York City residents.

  4. Ensure the graduate’s readiness to enter the rapidly changing inner city urban health care delivery system.

  5. Provide advancement in professional nursing leadership.

  6. Prepare the graduate for the rapidly changing healthcare delivery environment and higher education in nursing.

Practical Nursing Certificate

The Certificate in Practical Nursing program is registered, accredited and approved by the New York State Education Department (NYSED). 

The Practical Nursing Program is eighteen (18) months in length. It consists of three (3) semesters. It is an upward mobility opportunity for applicants to achieve a certificate in nursing. Upon completion, the graduate is eligible to sit the NCLEX-PN.

End-of-Program Student Learning Outcomes

Graduates of the Medgar Evers College PN Program will:

  1. Provide safe, quality, nursing care to diverse populations across the lifespan (S).

  2. Assist with the review and revision of nursing care plans and function within nursing inter-professional teams to achieve quality patient care (TWC).

  3. Provide for the needs and preferences of culturally, ethnically, and socially diverse patients and their families (PCC).

  4. Use established nursing care protocols/guidelines to monitor document and communicate data for improvement of patient care (QI).

  5. Provide health promotion and restoration information and support using best current evidence for delivery of optimal care for patients and their families (EBP).

  6. Use computer technology to provide patient-centered care.

Admission Requirements

Applicants to the Medgar Evers College PN Program at Medgar Evers College must:

  1. Hold a High School Diploma or a General Equivalency Diploma (GED).

  2. Meet all requirements for admission to Medgar Evers College (MEC).

  3. All Science courses must have a grade of “B-”, or higher.

  4. Science courses must be current (within 5 years).

  5. Any college courses attempted must have a letter grade (no INC)

Progression and Retention

All students must meet the following requirements for Retention and Progression

  1. Achieve a “B-“or better in science course (s)

  2. Achieve a “B-“ or better in all nursing courses

  3. Students must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.7 or higher

  4. Students who fail to receive a satisfactory grade of “B-” or better in a nursing course will be given an opportunity to repeat a nursing course only once.

  5. A failure in any nursing course component will result in the student not advancing to the next course.

  6. Sequential completion of all required nursing courses with a grade of “B-” or better in each course is required.

  7. Students who do not maintain a “B-” or better (minimum 2.7 G.P.A.) will be required to withdraw from the Program.

  8. Students are allowed only two opportunities to withdraw from any nursing course during their time in the program. Withdrawing from two classes in the same semester is considered equivalent to one withdrawal.

  9. Subsequent withdrawals from a nursing course will result in dismissal from the nursing program.

  10. Students are expected to complete the Program in no more than three (3) years

Withdrawal from the Nursing Program

A student who withdraws from the program must petition the department’s Admission, Retention, Progression Committee (ARPC) in writing for re-admission. A student who withdraws and is re-admitted must follow the curriculum in effect at the time of re-admission.

Associate in Applied Science in Nursing (AAS)

Associate in Applied Science in Nursing (AAS) HEGIS CODE: 5208.00

The Associate Degree program is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) and is approved and registered by the New York State Education Department. The (NCLEX-RN) of AAS graduates reported that they were employed as registered nurses within 12 months of graduation.

The AAS program is a full-time program and is designed to be completed in 4 semesters. The program prepares the individual to enter the profession as a registered nurse. It provides the foundation for entry into undergraduate study for the achievement of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

End-of-Program Student Learning Outcomes:

Graduates of the Medgar Evers College AAS Program will:

  1. Minimize risk of harm to patients through use of principles of safe nursing practice.

  2. Collaborate through effective communication with members of the health care team,

    and patients to provide optimal patient care outcomes.

  3. Demonstrate professional, moral, and ethical conduct with respect for patient and family preferences and diverse needs.

  4. Use quality measures to monitor, improve, and design patient care.

  5. Incorporate best practices and current evidence in decision-making and delivery of health care.

  6. Integrate science with information and technology to communicate and use decision support systems in the delivery of patient care

Admission Criteria:

All requirements for admission to Medgar Evers College must be met. For progression to the Clinical Nursing Phase of the AAS, students must meet additional requirements. These requirements include, but may not be limited to:

  1. Completion of Medgar Evers College Admissions Application

  2. Enrollment at Medgar Evers College for a minimum of one semester.

  3. A grade of B- or higher in all Science courses.

  4. Completion of College Core requirements.

  5. Minimum 2.7 cumulative Grade Point Average required.

  6. A criminal background check completed. Candidate must successfully pass the criminal background check. 

  7. Repeat science courses which are older than 5 years.

  8. Satisfactory score on the National League for Nursing Pre- Admission Examination-RN (Verbal Ability, Mathematics, Science and Composite Score). 

  9. Any college courses attempted must have a letter grade(No INC).

Progression and Retention

  • Sequential completion of all pre-requisite, co-requisite, and nursing courses as required.

  • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7 and a grade of B- or better in all biology courses.

  • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7 and a grade of B- or better in all nursing courses.

  • Achieving less than a “B-“is considered a failing grade. At any time in the program, if a student fails any two nursing courses, the result will be a dismissal from the nursing program.

  • Achieving less than a “B-” in a nursing course is considered a failing grade. Only one failure in a nursing course is allowed. A second failure in a nursing course will result in dismissal from the nursing program.

  • Schedule advisement sessions each semester with an assigned nursing faculty advisor while enrolled in the clinical phase of the nursing program.

  • Pass all three (3) course components (lecture, skills lab & clinical) to progress.

  • Students are allowed only two opportunities to withdraw from any nursing course during their time in the program.

  • Withdrawing from two classes in the same semester is considered equivalent to one withdrawal.

  • Subsequent withdrawals from a nursing course will result in dismissal from the nursing program.

  • Complete the program within three years.

Withdrawal from the Nursing Program

  • An attempt is defined as having registered in the course for at least three weeks and appeared on the roster, and/or received any grade (academic or administrative).

The Bachelor of Science Degree program (RN-BS completion) allows registered nurses to continue their education. 90% of RN-BS students reported that they were working as registered nurses upon completion of the program.

The RN-BS completion program provides broad-based knowledge and skills for registered nurses (associate degree and diploma prepared) to continue their education and career mobility as managers and leaders. The program also provides the foundation for graduate study in nursing practice and education. Registered nurse students have opportunities to advance their clinical skills and knowledge through exciting experiences in community health, research participation, and leadership.

End of Program Student Learning Outcomes:

Graduates of the Medgar Evers College RN-BS Nursing Program will:

  1. Synthesize theoretical knowledge from the sciences, humanities, and nursing to enhance professional nursing practice.

  2. Provide nursing care that is respectful of the cultural, ethnic, and spiritual diversity of the client populations.

  3. Incorporate critical thinking and clinical nursing judgement in providing safe and

    quality nursing care to diverse client populations.

  4. Employ the use of information, technology and research findings in evidence-based

    nursing practice.

  5. Demonstrate nursing knowledge, ethical attitudes, moral behaviors, and leadership

    abilities.

Admission Requirements

To qualify for admission to the RN-BS completion program, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Meet all college admission requirements

  • Have a minimum nursing and cumulative GPA of 2.5

  • Will be awarded up to 60 credits from the previous degree (30 credits of Arts & Science and 30 credits of Nursing).

Nursing Department Requirements

  • Attend orientation to BS program during the first week of NUR 304 ( entry course in the program);

  • Review the BS Handbook and submit a signed BS contract acknowledging receipt of the handbook from a nursing faculty;

  • Submit proof of a satisfactory physical examination and immunization record annually (NURL 318 and NURL 421);

  • Submit basic life support (CPR) certification upon admission and at recertification;

  • Upload required documents to Castlebranch;

  • Pass Nclex Exam by the start of the following semester to progress in the program.

Progression and Retention

A student in the RN-BS program must:

  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 and a grade of “C” or better in all required non-nursing courses;

  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 and a grade of “C” or better in all nursing courses.

  • Satisfactory completion of clinical components of nursing courses with a passing (P) grade.

  • Achieving less than a “C” in a nursing course is considered a failing grade. Only one failure in a nursing course is allowed.  A second failure in a nursing course may result in dismissal from the nursing program.

  • Schedule advisement sessions each semester with an assigned nursing faculty advisor.

  • A student is allowed to withdraw once from a course

  • Complete the program within five years

  • Pass Nclex Exam by the start of the following 2nd semester to progress in the program.

Required Documents:

Students planning to take nursing courses with a clinical component (NUR/NURL 318 or NUR/NURL 421) must upload to CASTLE BRANCH the following documents prior to the first clinical experiences at the date specified by the program:

  • CPR certification with AED

  • Malpractice insurance

  • Annual physical exam required NYS immunization, flu shot, and other clearances to meet the requirements of the specific clinical agency or site.

  • Drug screening and clinical background check (not required by MEC DON but many clinical agencies).

Credit/ Clock Hour Definition:

Credit Hour is the unit measure of instruction by which progress toward a degree is calculated. A credit hour is equivalent to one hour of classroom instruction (50 minutes) with a normal expectation of two hours of outside study for each class session. Hybrid and Online Courses must meet the total amount of instructional and student work time, even if delivered online or asynchronously. 

Policy for Clinical Nursing Students *

All CUNY nursing departments will require applicants for admission into nursing clinical to provide documentation in one of the following categories:

  1. US Citizenship,

  2. Permanent Residency,

  3. An international student with F1 Status,

  4. Granted Asylum, Refugee Status, Temporary Protected Status, Withholding of Removal, or Deferred Action Status by the US Government.

The CUNY Citizenship and Immigration Project provides free counseling to all CUNY students regarding immigration status. Students can contact The Center for Law and Social Justice in the Carroll Street building.
