Description
This course studies the literature by and about Africans in Britain during slavery, emancipation, and empire with a particular focus on the 18th and 19th centuries, and examines the literary, political, and legal resistance to slavery. The course looks at the diverse experiences – in terms of gender, legal status, location and occupation of Africans living in Britain during the period. Focused mostly on Black British writers and on African diaspora authors whose works were influential in the British context, the course also addresses representations of Africans in British literature and culture during the period.
