Applied Research Methods in Community Health Education I

This course prepares students to be knowledgeable consumers of applied community health research and the broader field of health research. While this course introduces students to basic research concepts and language, the emphasis is on the application of research findings. This emphasis instructs community health and healthcare professions students to appraise research studies (particularly the peer-reviewed literature), engage in a largely deductive process of reasoning that leads to the development of skills to interpret research findings, and apply this knowledge to practice especially surrounding the advancement of community health standards of care. Students examine the historical, social, scientific, political, and professional factors that influence the conduct of nursing and related healthcare research, including important ethical issues. The components of research design, implementation, evaluation, dissemination, and utilization of findings are discussed and critiqued, particularly as they relate to applied and evidence-based practice.
