Course Title
Teaching Computational Thinking and Elementary Mathematics
Department(s)
Description
The major goal of this course is to examine how CT can be integrated within the elementary teaching practices (2nd to 6th grade) to achieve learning objectives in mathematics. The course will serve as an option for students instead of taking MATH 231, and at the same time this will be one of the electives of Mathematics Concentration courses for Education Majors. PSTs will learn spatial sense and geometric reasoning-such as what makes shapes alike and different can be determined by geometric properties.PSTs will learn strategic use of technology in the teaching and learning of mathematics by using digital and physical tools and apply technology to enhance students’ learning, experience, communication, and doing mathematics.PSTs will learn that strategic use of technological tools can support learning of mathematical procedures and skills as well as the development of advanced mathematical proficiencies, such as problem solving, reasoning, and justifying.PSTs will analyze characteristics and properties of two- and three-dimensional geometric shapes and develop mathematical arguments about geometric relationships using Scratch Logo.PSTs will enable children to recognize, name, build, draw, compare, and sort two- and three-dimensional shapes; describe attributes and parts of two- and three-dimensional shapes; investigate and predict the results of putting together and taking apart two- and three-dimensional shapes
