Capitalism, Urbanization, and Dispossessed People
Department(s)
Description
This course introduces students to capitalism, urbanization, and dispossessed people as integral to the genesis of the modern world populated by nation- states, liberalism, and the capitalist world economy. Consequently, a major project of this course is to draw parallels regarding colonialism, imperialism, and white supremacy's impacts on the lived experiences of native people such as Indigenes in the Americas, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. Parallels are drawn between Indigenes’ experiences and those of African Americans. Case studies are utilized as a comparative tool and the chronological boundaries are from the long sixteenth century (1492-1607) to the present.
